I don’t believe your name is Barbara

A couple of days ago I posted a piece titled “Hey Barb! (part of “Bring him to Justice”)” in which I rip into three messages sent by someone using the name “Barbara”.  These three messages were intended as comments on an earlier piece (June 2013) called “Bring him to justice – CAPTURED”.

Some background before I continue.  The “Bring him to justice” series deals with the Toronto Police Service search for one George Flowers, aka “Mr Flowas”, who is, in my opinion, a not very good rapper.  He is wanted on multiple charges of aggravated sexual assault for failing to disclose his HIV positive status to his partners – for at least fifteen years.  Some of those partners are now positive themselves.  Currently he is in a Jamaican jail while he exhausts all avenues of appeal against his extradition to Canada.

It was the first of the three messages that raises the most questions, not only my own, but from others who have read it. I’ll copy it here:

You know nothing and this blog is discrediting his reputation as any logical person would know they have to prove that he gave it them and that can not be proven so… , your friends were so quick to bus it open and now that have something you want to call him a monster no one told you to have sex , he is no monster he made mistakes and will get the proper punishment most of these woman are just spiteful that they were fucked and dumped , watch what you say about a man that you know nothing about

Obviously, from my perspective, the writer hasn’t read any of the previous posts from the series or else they would have known that I state I’ve met George Flowers and actually know a fair bit about him and also state I know some of the people he’s dated.  And as a  writer, I also find the lack of punctuation disturbing.

Some people who have read these messages made the observation that if they – particularly this first one – were in fact written by a woman, then she’s gone off her anti-psychotic meds.  They further state they cannot believe any woman could come to the defence of this man knowing what he’s done. One person wrote the following:  I can’t even begin to go there with this lunatic bitch… obviously she is under some kind of fairy tale spell.

Other people believe this was actually written by a man.  They feel the word choice and that they open the message with a defence of Flowers indicate more of a male mindset since it seems the writer is blaming the women for what happened.  That may be for it seems to be more of a male attitude to blame the victim.

Whether it was written by a man or a woman is immaterial.  What matters is that some deluded soul is defending George Flowers. You must ask yourself would they feel the same if it were their sister; girlfriend, or just a friend who was now HIV positive after dating George Flowers?    I strongly suspect they’d be searching for the highest tree from which to lynch him.

Hey Barb! (part of “Bring him to justice”)

You don’t mind if I call you Barb, do you?

This is about the three comments you posted on “Bring him to justice – CAPTURED!” last night.  Before I start, just so you know, I began writing about the charges against, and the search for, George Flowers on August 14, 2012 and the piece you commented on was written June 11, 2013, so my question is “Where have you been hiding for the past two-and-a-half years?”

Now, your comments.  First, this one:

You know nothing and this blog is discrediting his reputation as any logical person would know they have to prove that he gave it them and that can not be proven so… , your friends were so quick to bus it open and now that have something you want to call him a monster no one told you to have sex , he is no monster he made mistakes and will get the proper punishment most of these woman are just spiteful that they were fucked and dumped , watch what you say about a man that you know nothing about watch what you say about a man that you know nothing about

This is so full of inaccuracies, probably including your name, I don’t know where to start.  To use your own words, “any logical person would know” the Toronto Police Service must feel they have sufficient evidence to lay those charges.  “He is no monster he made mistakes”.  That must be some great ganja you’ve got.  The Oxford Dictionary describes a mistake as “an error in judgement”, among other things.  That for fifteen years he failed to tell any of his partners he was HIV positive takes his actions far beyond the “mistake” range and puts him squarely into monster territory.  Another inaccuracy (don’t worry, I’m almost done) is your “fucked and dumped” comment.  At least two women I know did the dumping, not him, which is the complete opposite of your claim.  Finally, in what moment  of clairvoyant clarity did you determine I know nothing about the man.  I’ve met him and spent time in his company.  I know he’s married and has kids and I even know his wife’s name.  I also know that rather than cross the street to hear him perform, I’d cross the street to avoid hearing him.   By the way, out of curiosity, should I consider your “watch what you say about a man that you know nothing about” a threat?

Now, your second message:

where are you getting your information

Sorry Barb, like any respectable journalist, I won’t reveal my sources.

And, your final message:
Barbara

lastly if he is found guilty he will get less than 10 years and then be free now tell me would you be scared of a man you just convicted

No, I wouldn’t be scared.  Actually, if it were up to me, I’d have charged him with attempted murder, not aggravated sexual assault, and if any of his victims have passed on, I’d charge him with first degree murder.  Yes, first degree, because he made a conscious decision not to reveal his status.  And Barb, consider this: People convicted of the crimes he is charged with, especially if they are HIV positive, are not among the elite in the prison hierarchy.  He can expect to have a very rough time in prison.  Things happen in prisons so he may not make it through that sentence.

I hope I answered your questions and concerns.

Bring him to justice – CAPTURED!!!

An elite squad from the Jamaican Constabulary Force has arrested George Flowers aka ‘Mr Flowas” on Canadian warrants of aggravated sexual assault. This happened about 1 pm Toronto time June 4.  At the time of writing, Flowers is in a Jamaican jail awaiting an extradition hearing.

As with all cases involving someone captured in a foreign country, the person can either waive or fight the extradition order.  In this case, waiving extradition would mean Flowers could be returned to Canada post-haste or, if he fights it, he will spend time in a Jamaican prison.  I must admit I have mixed feelings about this situation.  As I wrote in the original posting “Bring him to justice” I know people who dated this man.  Yes, I’m glad he’s finally been detained.  It’s about time this piece of garbage was off the streets so he can’t infect anyone else.

This is good news, but it is tempered by this: if he waives extradition, or the Jamaican courts reject his arguments, he will be returned to Canada to stand trial. While the police investigation and search have awakened memories in his victims, the worst could still be ahead for them.  It is my understanding Mr Flowers now has AIDS and is extremely ill.  Given his condition, I would hope there is a possibility he would plead guilty.  If he doesn’t, then his lawyers will do their best to discredit his victims.  These victims don’t need to relive that part of their lives again; nor do they deserve to have their reputations dragged through the gutter, neither should they have the lives they’ve carefully rebuilt destroyed, yet this could happen under our system of justice.

One victim has told me that in hearing of his arrest she feels she has received some justice and is very elated at this news.

As more information becomes available, I’ll report it.

To repeat what Detective Johnston wrote earlier,    His non-disclosure actions are criminal whether or not a sexual encounter resulted in HIV infection. A lot of people are under the impression that if they DIDN’T contract HIV, that they have no criminal claim and that is false. The charge is for the “threat” of contracting the virus at the time of sexual contact if they were NOT advised of someone’s HIV status PRIOR to any sexual encounter.  If the fact George was at large has kept you from contacting the police in the past, now that he’s in custody, I urge you to please contact Detective Nancy Johnston, Toronto Police Service, 55 Division at 416-808-5505.

You sir, are dangerous

A friend posted a photo and two quotes on Facebook yesterday.  The photo is of an American senator and no I won’t tell you who, or his party affiliation, or what state he represents, purely to save him any further embarrassment.

His comments referred to AIDS and were both uninformed and highly inaccurate.  There were no dates or places attached to these quotes, so I don’t know how old, or new, they are but they would have incensed me anyway.

Here’s his first comment: Most people realize that AIDS came from the homosexual community.  It was one guy screwing a monkey, if I recall correctly, and then having sex with men.  It was an airline pilot, if I recall.  Senator, you are so far off-base on this you aren’t even in the ballpark.  A while ago I read an article, probably on the Toronto Star news site, about research that had been done on the origins of AIDS in humans.  I do not recall the author of the research nor the institute that conducted it. If anyone knows, please tell me so I may amend this posting and give them proper credit.

According to this research, poor tribesmen would capture, kill and skin monkeys in order to sell both the meat and the hides.  If you’ve ever worked in a kitchen preparing food, you know how easy it can be to cut yourself.  No different in this case.  They would cut themselves accidentally and then come in contact with the monkey blood.  If the monkey was infected, the virus would transfer to the human.  Some of these tribesmen would also sell their blood to augment their income which is how AIDS made its way into the blood supply.  No bestiality has taken place Senator, except in your tiny mind.

The person referred to as “Patient Zero” was a steward for Air Canada (sorry Senator, not  pilot – your memory is wrong).  He was involved in a crash of some kind in one of these African nations and required a transfusion.  Unfortunately, the blood was tainted.  Being gay, when he returned to Canada, he engaged in sexual activity with other men, which spread the disease.

The senator’s other comment is equally stupid – and that’s the only word for it.  My understanding is that it is virtually, not completely but virtually, impossible to contract AIDS through heterosexual sex … very rarely.  Senator, you are a complete ass.  Senator, I suggest you read my series of postings under the heading “Bring him to justice”, then explain to the ten victims of George Flowers who are now HIV positive how it is “virtually impossible” for them to have contracted HIV/AIDS from Flowers.  I’m sure they’ll give you a proper hearing before they laugh you out of the room.  By the way Senator, George Flowers is now wanted by the Toronto Police Service on at least ten charges of aggravated sexual assault related to these women.

Surely, as a senator in the Government of the United States of America his office budget would allow for a research clerk.  Before he opened his mouth and proved his stupidity, couldn’t he have asked someone to get him some factual information on AIDS?

I’m not sure which I find more frightening, that people actually elected this man or, that since he is a senator, they will accept his pronouncements as gospel.  As I wrote in the title, this man is dangerous.

**Since posting this, I have learned this foolish, foolish man is a state senator, not federal. C **

Bring him to justice – recap

Last August I began a series of posts under the general title “Bring him to justice” following the release of a Public Safety Alert by the Toronto Police Service.  The subject of this PSA was one George Flowers, aka “Mr Flowas”, wanted for aggravated sexual assault.  This man was diagnosed HIV positive in 1996 but neglected to tell his sexual partners, some of whom are now themselves HIV positive.  My interest in this case arises from the fact I know people he dated.

As new verifiable information became available, or as I felt it necessary to respond to comments on postings, I would add another posting to the series. According to the last verifiable report, actually an updated PSA, he was facing twelve charges.  I haven’t added anything over the past couple of months for the simple reason I won’t print rumours.  Oh, I’ve heard stories that he’s been spotted here or there; that he’s being hidden somewhere, or that he’s turned himself in.  But without any confirmation, I won’t print these canards and nobody can confirm the information.  So it doesn’t get printed.  One further reason for that decision, especially the rumour he’s turned himself in, is that it would give false hope to his victims, and their lives are hard enough without me adding to their difficulties.

If you have any information on the present whereabouts of George Flowers, or you wish to add yourself to the list of victims, I urge you to contact Detective Nancy Johnston at the Toronto Police Service, 55 Division, telephone number 416-808-5505.  You can also contact CrimeStoppers anonymously with your information.  According to information from Det Johnston, you don’t have to have been diagnosed positive to file a complaint, just that fact you were with him is enough.

Considering the lack of interest from the mainstream media on this, I feel confident that if something does happen on the search for George Flowers, you’ll read it here first.

Cat.

I can’t do that

One of the main bits of information given to those who would write blogs is “pick a subject and write about that”.  If you choose, say, writing, then write about the various aspects of writing. If you pick photography, then use your site to explore that world.  Travel, food, whatever subject you decide upon should be the focus of most, if not all, your postings.”

Sounds like good, solid advice.  Too bad I don’t follow it.  If you follow or read my postings, you’ve noticed I write about anything and everything that catches my eye.  That is why you’ll find an essay on friends amid postings on scams (“More money I won’t get”) or the latest antics of Toronto’s sometime mayor (“Football first”) or ripping into some of the spam I find (“Look who’s talking”).

Do I have the knowledge and experience to write on a single topic?  Probably. I’ve written before on blogging (“Our words are powerful”) but my mind doesn’t work in a manner that allows me to focus solely on one topic. I’m interested in the world at large and when something in the news provokes a response, I act on it.  Granted there are some subjects that are closer to my heart than others, but I won’t write about them exclusively.

For example, since August, I’ve written a series of posts under the main title “Bring him to justice”.  This series deals with the Toronto Police search for one George Flowers, aka “Mr Flowas”, a wannabe rapper who is wanted for aggravated sexual assault.  This “thing” was diagnosed HIV positive in 1996 but never told any of his partners. I know people who dated him and some have since tested positive, so I have a personal interest in seeing this garbage off the streets.  But that series is as close as I’ve come to a single topic.  And the reason there haven’t been any recent postings under that title is that there is no concrete news to write about and I won’t put up rumours.  As it states in my public profile, I’m transgendered.  There are already enough people out there writing blogs on the LGBT community, so I doubt I could add anything of import.  I have written on those issues, but only from a personal perspective, where something will or does affect me personally.

So, having said all this, I repeat, that is good advice – pick a subject in which you have knowledge and write about it.  But, I can’t do that.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and remember to hug an artist – we need love too.

Honestly, I don’t care

This is in response to “John”, who left a comment on my posting “Bring him to justice – more media questions”.  There were certain things in that comment that made me doubt the authenticity of it, so I consigned it to “trash” rather than approve it.  At one point, he asks me if I’m one of the victims.

That question tells me two things about “John”.  First that he didn’t bother reading the entire posting.  And second, he’s an idiot.  A positive HIV diagnosis truly is a life-changing event.  It has taken years for some of these people to rebuild their lives after receiving this devastating news.  If you followed the link I included in “Bring him to justice – a victim speaks”, you’ll note they used a pseudonym and the lady’s face and voice were altered.  Many, if not all, people affected do not tell anyone except loved ones of their condition.  Since that is my real name on this profile, why on earth would “John” even ask if I’m one of the victims.  If I were, and I used my real name, I would no doubt find myself ostracized very quickly.

“John” also mentions there is family and children involved and they don’t need to see this all over the internet and television.  First off “John”, I have a relatively small readership.  If you really wanted to have an affect on the publicity surrounding this, why didn’t you go after Global – they’re the ones who had the interview and most of the coverage.  But I suppose you think a little blogger would be an easier target to bully.  Guess what dude?  I don’t bully, nor will I be bullied.

Now, at no time in any of the “Bring him to justice” series do I mention George Flowers’s marital status or whether there are children involved.  Oh, I know there are children and I also know his wife’s name, but this series is about getting George Flowers, aka “Mr Flowas” off the streets, not his family.  As for his children (and I know this will sound heartless) honestly, I don’t care.  Before you start calling me the biggest bitch of all time for saying that, let me continue.  As I wrote (“John”, take note of this) I know several people who dated George Flowers, some of whom have since tested positive.  At the moment, to my knowledge, these people are HIV positive.  Should that develop into AIDS, what is called “serial conversion”, I will have the choice of watching my friends die of this horrible disease or abandoning my friends right at the time they will need friends most.

George Flowers has been charged with 11 counts of aggravated sexual assault.  Here’s the link to the Public Safety Alert issued October 3, 2012:   http://www.torontopolice.on.ca/newsreleases/pdfs/24672.pdf.  Read it for yourself. Should any of his victims develop AIDS, I sincerely hope the Toronto Police Service upgrades those charges to first degree murder, for he will have killed them.  His children  having to live with the stigma of their father being a murderer seems a far lesser evil than me watching my friends die because of George Flowers.  I want him off the streets before he infects and kills more women.

“John” also asked why it took Public Health 15 years to act.  Good question “John” and I’m sure the lawyers will be certain to ask that when the lawsuits get to court.  Yes, I understand some of the victims are suing Public Health.  Don’t know exactly what the reasons will be, but to my mind, dereliction of duty or some similar charge will be paramount among the list in the suit.  (Oct 5 1:15pm – to clarify, I’m sure that if there aren’t lawsuits filed, there will be an inquiry into what went wrong at Public Health. C.)

“John”, if you felt you could elicit an apology from me by invoking George Flowers’s family, you’re out of luck.  If you thought you could get a retraction of some sort from me with your comment well, that ain’t gonna happen.  The messages of support and thanks I’ve received from his victims and friends of his victims far outweigh comments and messages like yours.  Look at it this way “John” (and I hope this doesn’t sound as if I’m trying to elevate myself) I’m speaking for the victims, for those who want this out there but for various reasons, such as personal privacy and safety, don’t want to do it themselves.  I’m acting as their voice.  “John”, if you want to dispute my postings, set up your own blogsite and go to it.

Bring him to justice – more media questions

On the 13th of August, the Toronto Police Service issued a Public Safety Alert for one George Flowers, aka “Mr Flowas”, wanted for aggravated sexual assault.  This man, according to that Alert, has been HIV positive since 1996, but never told his sexual partners.

You would think something like this might rate some attention from the media.  Except for one mention on CP24 which is a local all news television station, and one two inch single column item in a local paper, there was nothing.  Radio stations do have this on their news websites, some local, two on the Prairies that I saw, and CKNW, which is in New Wesminster B C.  As I have written before, I know people who dated this man, some of whom have since tested positive, so I’ve written several blogs on this man and the search for him.  When I started, I had thought my words would supplement the coverage in the mainstream media.  However, I had several people tell me I have been the only source of information on this matter.

Today, the Toronto Police Service issued a new Public Safety Alert, this time advising they had a Canada-wide warrant for his arrest on 11 charges of aggravated sexual assault. As I wrote earlier today in “Bring him to justice – a victim speaks”, Global Television Toronto spoke with one of his victims.  Here’s the link the item and interview: www.globaltoronto.com/hiv+positive+man+wanted+for+aggravated+sexual+assault+charges/6442727205/story.html.  Listen to this lady’s words as she describes how her life has been turned upside down by her positive diagnosis and the callous attitude George Flowers displayed when she told him.

I’ve checked the news sites again tonight.  In addition to the news radio sites, I find mention of this in the online editions of both The Toronto Sun and The Toronto Star, for print media and as well as the Global coverage, CITY TV, a local station and CP24 for television.

My question for the media, who now seem to be all gung-ho about covering this story, is this: Why weren’t you doing this back on August 13 when the first Alert was issued?  Why did it take the issuance of a Canada-wide warrant to get your attention?  The tag line on my site is “one lone voice calling in the wilderness”, and in the case of the search for George Flowers, for the past seven weeks, that’s what I’ve been.  I hope that after today, rather than a lone voice, I’m merely part of a chorus.

If you know George Flowers, aka “Mr Flowas”, please contact your local police service or CrimeStoppers.  Help get him off the streets.

Bring him to justice – a victim speaks

Earlier today I posted “Bring him to justice – nationwide” about the fact the Toronto Police Service has issued a Canada wide warrant for George Flowers, aka “Mr Flowas”.  This man is now wanted on 11 charges of aggravated sexual assault.

The new Public Safety Alert was issued at 10:55 this morning according to the police website.  I first heard a news report of this PSA on the noon news and had posted “Bring him to justice – nationwide” by 12:30.  Sometime between the release of the PSA and about 1:10 PM, someone called the Toronto affiliate of the Global Television Network to tell them of this.  Consequently, Global contacted the detective and arranged an interview with one of his victims.

Until now, the bulk of the publicity of the search for George Flowers has come through these postings.  I hope my words have been effective in convincing those he dated to contact the police.  I hope they have, but they are only words.  Now, there is an interview with someone.  Here is the link to the news item and interview:  http://www.globaltoronto.com/hiv+positive+man+wanted+for+aggravated+sexual+assault+charges/6442727205/story.html

I urge you to listen to this interview, listen to how this lady’s life has been affected and hear  how callous George Flowers was when she told him she was positive.

If you know George Flowers, aka “Mr Flowas”, do the right thing and contact your local police force or CrimeStoppers.

Cat.

Bring him to justice – nationwide

Earlier today, the Toronto Police Service obtained a Canada-wide warrant for George Flowers, aka “Mr Flowas” on 11 charges of aggravated sexual assault.   Here is the link to this new Public Safety Alert:
http://www.torontopolice.on.ca/newsreleases/pdfs/24672.pdf
At the time the original release was issued on August 13, it was believed by some who knew him that he was either being hidden somewhere in Toronto, or had fled to Jamaica.  I would suggest that by issuing the Canada-wide alert, Toronto Police believe he is somewhere in Canada, rather than off-shore.

Mr Flowers, according to the original Alert, and repeated in this new one, has been HIV positive since 1996, but neglected to mention this to any of his partners, some of whom have now tested positive.  If you know this man George Flowers, who performs under the name “Mr Flowas”, if you know where he is, do a lot of women a favour and report his whereabouts to your local police department or CrimeStoppers.  We need to get him off the streets before he infects any more people.
