From the archives

I don’t usually write poetry. It’s always been something I’ve struggled with and I’ll admit I am in awe of those who can and do write in that form.

The following piece is from 1988 and as near as I can recall was inspired by something I saw on the train home.

Chance meetings by design
Carefully planned to happen.
Spontaneity well rehearsed
Until it seems natural.
Casual moves choreographed
To achieve a certain effect.

No loose thread must mar the look
Of greatly feigned indifference –
You act thus; I act so;
Speak of this and I speak of that.
Each other’s moves anticipated
Counteracted as they happen
Until the playlet has been run
And all the feints defeated:
Leaving us alone, disarmed;
Facing each other in honesty.

Enjoy the rest of your week and remember to hug an artist – we need love too.
